Spotify wants to beat YouTube at audio
YouTube might be the world's most popular video streaming service, but it is still second to Spotify in one area: music. This is according to a new report by Recode. Spotify has 70 million subscribers, while YouTube still beats it in terms of number of daily users. However, YouTube's listening sessions are much shorter than those of Spotify and Recode believes that this is why there may be an opportunity for Spotify to win over YouTuber's audio audience.
A new Spotify portal for artists and their teams lets them upload audio clips directly to the streaming service. It's a direct shot at YouTube, which has grown in popularity as an alternative to SoundCloud for musicians, podcasters and audiobook narrators. Spotify and YouTube may seem like the same thing to you or me—audio or video on demand, accessed through a Web browser. But Spotify is investing heavily in new features that make it stand out from its competitors, especially YouTube.
Spotify is moving beyond the music business to take on YouTube. The streaming giant plans to let artists and record labels upload music directly to its platform, according to two people familiar with Spotify's plans. Spotify's mission is to make music accessible to everyone. With this in mind, we want to make Spotify the largest audio platform in the world.
Spotify, the EUR8 billion Swedish audio streaming giant, seems to be on a quest for world domination. Following its acquisition of music production software developer Soundtrap late last year and its partnership with Snapchat, the company is now expanding in the podcast industry. Spotify has been a main music player for most of us for years now. But the landscape of the world's favourite video site has changed drastically over the last 12 months. In that time, their focus has shifted from creating audio-only content to visual media such as UGC, live production and curated playlists.
