Google’s Nest Doorbell can’t take the cold
People on Reddit are reporting their Google’s Nest Doorbells are quitting after a few months in the cold, making them effectively useless. The devices stop working once they hit below -4 Fahrenheit (-20 Celsius), which is well within the range of many states in the US right now.
“We want to let you know that we have discovered an issue with Nest Hello where the doorbell can stop functioning in temperatures below -4°F. This is caused by a suboptimal firmware update that incorrectly monitors the temperature inside the camera,” Google said in a note first spotted by AndroidPolice. “This does not impact your ability to make and receive calls with Google Duo or your Wi-Fi network. We are fixing this issue with an automatic firmware update to be released within the next week…” The company also says it will roll out the fix automatically between January 14th and February 2nd
I was excited to take the Nest Doorbell and test it in my hometown of NYC. However, Google made a vital oversight in the installation components. At no time did they specify the doorbell would not work below -4 °F, yet this is an essential component to install given that many parts of the country can reach temperatures below 0 °F.
Nest Hello Doorbell is not a suitable product to work in freezing temperatures. It is merely a doorbell, that you could say comes with a camera. But Google doesn't like to use the term "camera" because the doorbell is only one part of an entire surveillance system. Let's just start there, if you actually are considering purchasing it, you better be prepared for what you are getting into.
